Enoch - Genesis 5:21-24 and Hebrews 11:5

Idea 1

Practice going on walks with different people and things.  Ask the kids to walk across the room or around the church with different people or things.  Bring in a dog and ask the kids to walk with the dog, ask the kids to walk with a toddler, ask the kids to walk with a someone who wants to walk in the opposite direction or who just sits down and won’t move.

Ask them how they felt when walking with these different people?  Who was the easiest to walk with and who was the hardest?  Who took the lead on your walk, who decided how fast or slow to walk?  Who do you think takes the lead when you are walking with Jesus?

Idea 2

Play follow the leader.  Have the kids follow one of the leaders around and copy what they do.  Ask the leader to do some fun things like crawling under things, and jumping over other things.  Then tell the kids, that walking with Jesus is kind of like playing follow the leader.  Jesus is the leader and we do what he does.

Idea 3

Make a flip book of a person walking (Here is a video on how to make a flip book).  Talk about how Enoch walked with God for 300 years.  300 years is a long time to walk with someone?  Ask the kids, do you think God ever took a day off?  Do you think Enoch ever took a day off?  Do you think there were days when Enoch wanted to go in one direction and God wanted to go in a different direction?  What do you think happened on those days?

Idea 4

Talk about faith with the kids.  What is faith?  Usually when we hear stories of faith something big has happened, like Moses faces pharaoh and leads the people out of Egypt kind of faith, but in the story of Enoch where is the faith?  How does it take faith to walk with someone for 300 days?  Talk about what it means to have a steady faith, that we will walk with God when things are good and when things are hard.

Idea 5

Ask an older Christian to come in and share their story of walking with God daily.  Ask them to share some kid appropriate hard times and easy times and how they walked with God through those times.

Idea 6

Explore the idea of Enoch being no more.  Roll out some banner paper and brainstorm with the kids how Enoch might have disappeared?  Did he walk straight up to heaven?  Did he just disappear and then reappear in heaven?  Did he fade slowly?  Label the banner and Enoch was no more.  Then let the kids draw what they think might have happened.

Idea 7

What does it look like to walk with God daily?  What kinds of things can we do to make sure we are walking with God?  When I go for a walk with someone, we like to talk along the way.  We talk about what we see, what is happening in our lives.  How can we talk to God daily?  When I walk with someone we sometimes go on adventures, we might end up in new places and seeing new things.  How can we go on adventures with God?  When I walk with someone every day, I really get to know them.  How can we be consistent in walking with God every day so that we get to know him more and more?

Idea 8

Talk with the younger kids about what it looks like to walk with God.  Ask them to stand up and say things like:

  • Jump up and down if you have read a bible story.

  • Do jumping jacks if you have prayed.

  • Crawl on the floor if you said thank you God for something.

  • Tap your head if you have asked God to help you with something.

  • Rub your tummy if you have said sorry to someone you hurt.

  • Run on the spot as fast as you can if you have told someone else about God.

Then tell the kids that when we do all these things we are walking with God.
