Idea 1

Read through this story with the kids

  • Let them colour in the story while you ask them questions..

  • How much food did the boy have?

  • What was Jesus doing?

  • Who did the boy share his lunch with?

Idea 2

Plan a pretend party with the kids

  • talk about how many people you would invite

  • guess about how much food you would need.

  • Maybe sit down all together and eat a pizza and you are planning all of this.

  • Then talk about how much food you would need to feed 5000 people.

  • Talk about the miracle that Jesus did.

Idea 3

Have a goldfish cracker eating contest

  • Give the kids a time limit, like 5 min and an unlimited amount of goldfish crackers.

  • See how many they can eat over the span of 5min.

  • The only trick is that they need to count how many crackers they ate.

  • How did they feel after eating crackers for 5 min straight? Are they full?

  • How did Jesus feed 5000 people with only 2 fish and 5 loaves?

Idea 4

 Talk about prayer.

  • Jesus took the loaves and fish and gave thanks.

  • If I had 5000 people to feed and so little food, I don’t think I would be giving thanks.

  • What does it mean to give thanks?

  • What are things for which we could give thanks?

Idea 5

Read Filled Full on page 244 of the Jesus Storybook Bible

Idea 6

Ask the kids to draw pictures or make a list of everything that they need.

  • talk about how much food, water, clothing, friends, sleep, shelter a person needs.

  • talk about how God takes care of all our needs.

  • If He took care of 5000 people all at once with only 5 loaves and 2 fish, He can definitely take care of us as well.

Idea 7

Talk about the fact that Jesus gave thanks for the food.

  • watch the “Thank You God For…” video

  • Give the kids goldfish crackers or cereal

  • Play the “Thank You God For…” prayer video and ask the kids to eat one of their goldfish crackers every time they see something on the list that they are thankful for as well.
