Jesus Sends Out the 70 - Luke 10:1-16

Idea 1

Bring some luggage with a number of things packed inside.

  • pack some food, clothes, favourite toy, jacket.

  • Open the luggage and show the kids the things you have packed, explain each item for example I packed some food in case I get hungry, and a jacket in case it gets cold.

  • Ask the kids if they think you forgot anything? What do they like to pack when they are going on a trip.

  • Tell them that in today’s story Jesus sent 70 or maybe even 72 people out on a trip, but he asked them not to take anything with them. No snacks, or extra clothes, or favourite toys, they just needed to go, just them with a friend and nothing else.

  • Ask them what they would do if they went on a trip with no luggage and no place to stay.

  • Come up with a plan together.

  • Then tell them that Jesus gave the 70 these instructions - to go to a house and say “peace be on you” they should stay at that house and eat what was given to them and to heal the sick”

Idea 2

Tell the kids that you are going on a short trip

  • Before this lesson plan to go to someone’s house nearby, have them ready to greet you and have snacks ready.

  • Before you set out, tell the kids that you are going on a trip to tell people about Jesus, there are lots of people who need to hear about Jesus and not enough people telling others about him, so we are going to tell people about Jesus.

  • Walk to the house and before you knock on the door, talk about what you are going to say. Tell the kids that after they knock, they should say “Peace be on this house”.

  • If they are allowed in the house (they will be allowed in, because all of this was planned) encourage them to pray and tell the people in the house about Jesus. Have some snacks and then tell them that it’s time to go home.

  • When you get back to the church, tell the kids the story of the 70 and how Jesus sends them out. Talk about the similarity between the bible story and the trip you just took.

Idea 3

Tell people about Jesus.

  • Explain to the kids that there are a lot of people who need to hear about Jesus, but there are not a lot of people telling others about Jesus.

  • Sit down with the kids and make some cards, or posters about Jesus.

  • Walk through your community and put the posters up, and put the cards in mailboxes or on car windshields.

Idea 4

Make a video about Jesus

  • Explain to the kids that there are a lot of people who need to hear about Jesus, but there are not a lot of people telling others about Him.

  • Suggest to the kids that you make a video about Jesus and then you could put it on youtube, or facebook and different places so that people could hear about Jesus.

  • Ask the kids to draw pictures and plan out what they are going to say.

Idea 5

Tell the story of Luke 10:1-16 in an interactive way.

  • Before you start telling the story do a little bit of prep work. Tape various places on the walls around where you will be telling the story.

  • Have a box on the floor underneath each picture with a different scenario in it. In some of the boxes put a few snacks, and maybe a drink and a piece of paper with an item that the kids can pray about.

  • In one of the boxes, just have a piece of paper that says “This is not a house of peace”.

  • Use this script to tell the story.
