Saddleback Kids - Walls of Jericho
VeggieTales - Josh and the Big Wall
Idea 1
Act out the story.
Make a large city out of blocks, forts, furniture, anything you can find.
Build walls around the city using chairs
Pretend that you and the kids are the people of Israel. Walk around the city one time each day for six days, on the seventh day, walk around the city seven times, yell, push all the chairs down and knock down the city.
Idea 2
Read “The Warrior Leader” on page 108 in the Jesus Storybook Bible.
Idea 3
Brainstorm as a group how to take over a city
Show the kids a picture of Jericho, with the walls
Brainstorm as a group the best way to take over the city.
Once you have a few ideas vote on what everyone thinks would be the best way.
Then read the story in the bible and find out how Israel took over Jericho.
Idea 4
Talk about obeying God.
Take some time to talk about the story with the kids.
Walking around a city seems like an unusual way to conquer a city, but anything is possible with God.
How would the kids feel if they were Joshua? Do you think Joshua was tempted to try conquering the city in a different way? Do you think Joshua thought the idea was crazy, or do you think he thought the idea was great?
Idea 5Play Jenga with the kids.
Get a game of giant Jenga or just regular Jenga
Let the kids take turns taking a piece from the bottom and putting it on top.
Talk about towers coming down, and how in todays story not only will a town come down up a whole wall.
Idea 6
Talk to the kids about the idea of God letting us be part of His victories.
show the kids this clip from a Narnia movie
Do you think Lucy could have stopped the army on her own?
Do you think the Lion could have stopped the army on his own?
We can relate to the story of Joshua and Lucy because God is doing big things around us and He lets us be part of His story. We just need to listen and obey.
Has God ever let you be part of something really big?
