Idea 1

Have a funeral for Saul.

Divide the everyone into groups and give them a large piece of mural paper.
Review with everyone all the things they can think of about Saul
Ask the kids to draw a few pictures to present during the funeral
At the end of the funeral, get a crown and say it was Sauls crown, ask one of the kids to pretend to be David and put the crown on Davids head. (crown David the new king of Israel)

Idea 2

Ask the kids to figure out who died.

Set up the scene.
Lay some swords out,
lay some stuffed animals down (pretend they are the Israelite army)
a sign that says Israelite camp and another one says Mount Gilboa.
Ask someone to pretend to be the young man, get him to wear torn clothes, and hold a bag that has Sauls crown and arm band.
Have an outline of a body on the ground and a spear beside it
Ask the kids to check out the scene. They need to figure out who died and how they died. Tell them they can ask all the questions they would like that will give a yes or no answer.

True or false questions

David killed King Saul (False)

King Saul asked someone to kill him (True)

Many of the Israelites died in battle (True)

Johnathan, David’s son did not die (False)

David was sad that Saul and Johnathan died (True)

David became the new king of Isreal (True)

Idea 4

Ask the kids the following questions

How do you think David felt when he found out that he was going to be King?
How did David feel waiting for years for Saul to die so he could become king?
Do you think David ever got tired of waiting to be King?
How did David feel when he found out that Saul had died? Did he have a party? Was he upset?
How would you feel if you were David?
Have you ever been promised something, but had to wait a long time?
